n mediaeval times. Winston did not submit to the power of the O'Brien and the Party until he was taken to room 101 where his worst fears became reality. A cage of rats was strapped to his face and the doors were slowly opened until Winston submitted. In room 101 he betrayed Julia by saying he wanted this torture to be done to her instead of him. By forcing Winston to wish the torture onto Julia, O'Brien had successfully brainwashed Winston. Winston had finally accepted the rule of the Party and declared his love for Big Brother.
The theme of 1984, by George Orwell, is that through the use of fear, ignorance, and the control of human thought and emotion, a totalitarian government can gain absolute power and acceptance from its citizens. Orwell uses the Party and Big Brother as a symbol of a totalitarian government. Winston is an example of how even the most rebellious citizens can be forced into submission.
The citizens of Oceania live in constant fear. They fear the war that is constantly being waged between the three superpowers, Oceania, Eastasia, and Eurasia. One of the Party's slogans is "War is Peace." As long as Oceania is at war, the Party will always be in control...
