The styles of the two authors are quite different. Neither writes in a strict chronological order. Both authors employ a detailed image by using third person. Golding writes in a loose chronological order teaching his lesson through the conflict of Ralph and Jack. Contrary to Golding, Stienbeck educates his readers in a very tight and defined structure through the friendship of George and his mentally handicap friend Lennie. In spite of that fact, both authors teach the reader a moral lesson through the interaction of fully developed human characters and their environment. Both George and Ralph’s characters are rich in meaning rather than simplistic oppositions.
Golding chooses to reveal Ralph as he interacts with disparate personalities without any real intimacy. Ralph is a fair and likeable boy whose self-assurance makes him feel secure, and whose has a drive to have a civilized life on the island. George is a poor, young man that has much self-respect, a strong drive of generosity and unselfish commitment. Both characters exhibit leader personas, as both think ahead, spot potential danger and do not seek out trouble. Unlike George, Ralph’s style of leadership is democratic and takes notice of others’ opinions, which eventually defeated by the evil contained within society. Despite George’s migrant lifestyle, his self-respect persists throughout the novel developing him into a character that grows in stature, a man who unlike Ralph is able to restrain from evil contained within society.
The sense of community is evident in the novel Of Mice and Men, but is not as obvious in the novel Lord of the Flies.
