confessed to the rape of Tonya Hailey. At one o’clock, the two criminals were brought
into the courthouse for the preliminary trial, which was to determine whether or not there
is enough evidence a crime has been committed to bind the defendants over to the grand
jury. The sheriff was called and questioned about what he knew about the rape. After no
other witnesses were to be called, the judge ended the court session, deciding the bail
hearing date and when the trial would be sent over to the grand jury. Court then
adjourned.
This is when Carl Lee spoke with Jake. He asked Jake if he were ever to be in a
jam, if Jake would get him out. Jake was curious and confused. Carl Lee asked him what
he would do if some man raped his little girl, Hanna. Jake simply replied that he’d kill the
man. Jake had won three murder trials, all black men, and Carl Lee asked if he wanted
