Algae are composed of vegetative cells, reproductive cells and holdfast cells. Some algae are unicellular (composed of one type of cell). Chlamydomonas is a genus of unicellular green algae. The individual organism is an oval haploid cell with a wall composed largely of glycoprotein; it differs from the walls of many other green algae in lacking cellulose. There are two anterior flagella (tail like structures used to swim with) of equal length and inside the organism there is a large cup-shaped chloroplast (contains chlorophyll) located in the bottom half. Pyrenoids, which are used to produce starch, are located at the base of the chloroplast, there is also a stigma, or eye-spot, which helps the organism find light necessary for photosynthesis.
