That French Abortion Pill
Approved on September 28th of this year, RU-468, "the abortion pill", became part of the American pharmaceutical arena. The Food and Drug Association, FDA, after years of consideration and testing, now permits practicing abortion providers to provide the abortion pill to their patients, with certain restrictions. By doing this government has allowed women more choices when pregnant, has removed some of the politics out of women’s reproductive decisions, and allocated them more privacy overall.
The same day the FDA announced the legalization of the abortion pill the Associated Press pronounced that a 12 year battle had finally come to an end. Danco Laboratories, based in New York, is the only company permitted to manufacture, issue and market RU-468. Some use restrictions were explained, such as doctors that can accurately diagnose the duration of pregnancy, tubal pregnancies and can operate when a surgical abortion is needed, will be have mifepristone, the scientific name of RU-468, distributed to them.
On that same day, the U.S. Newswire released a statement made by the president of Planned Parenthood, sharing her support of the FDA’s decision. She states, "…science has prevailed over politics, and we as a society will have the opportunity to get past the intrusions and interferences that have impeded women’s access to this abortion method all these years." The letter continues in support of the additional choice allocated to women.
Almost a month later, however, the FDA’s decision is being attacked by a medical group, partially funded by an abortion rights organization. Lindsey Tanner of the AP quotes an unnamed author of the study in the Journal of the American Medical Association stating the FDA conditions are "unnecessarily restrictive and creates scheduling and addition cost barriers to women."
