Alcoholism is a primary, chronic disease, continuous over drinking. The disease is often progressive and fatal. Alcohol is the most widely used and abused drug in America. There are 103 million people are current drinkers, and 11 million are heavy drinkers. There are three distinct stages of alcoholism. The early stage is using alcohol to relieve tention or escape from problems. Middle stage is not getting through the day without alcohol. And the late stage is lives to drink. Liver disorders, heart disease, and reproduction and pregnancyproblems are three long term effects of alcohol.
Many seriouos crimes every year are committed because of alcohol. 40% of all violent crimes are do to alcohol abuse. 54% of murders and attemted murders, 52% of rape/sexual assault, and 48% of robberies have something to do with alcohol.
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is a very big problem in our society today. It causes many health defects to innocent children such as: mental handicaps, learning problems, attention problems, speech and hearing impairment, impulsiveness, and incoordination.
Teens are starting to drink to intocication on a regular basis at the age of 13 or 14. It is the most often used drug by high school seniors. 90% of high school kids have tried alcohol. Over three million teens are out-and-out alcoholics, and 40% of college kids report recent heavy drinking. After drinking enough you start to gain a tolerance to some of the alcohol’s effects. As tolerance builds you need more alcohol for the same effect therefore alcoholism gets reached quickly. Addiction is said to be a disease of denial and regret. You deny the truth to yourself, and begin an unhealthy behavior pattern from abnormal obsession.Two factors that influence alcoholism are the environment and the family. Three ways to treat alcoholism are local health orginizations, rehab, and A.A.A. meetings....
